La argentina

Some things fit in an envelope.
Others find their own way.
There's a word we use back home, it's called maligaya,
A little word for happiness, for days that feel just right.
And maybe there's not much I can send from my side,
So I'll send that word instead, and hope it finds you tonight.
Maybe happiness sounds a little like your favorite tune,
Because after all, you’re a human jukebox from morning until noon.
One little phrase, and suddenly, a song comes to mind,
“It’s hard to believe, but I couldn’t see…”, and there you go, singing another line.
And while we’re talking about the things that make you who you are,
You can win honorable mention, but I’d still give you first prize by far.
You have strong opinions, your eyes light up when you’ve got something to say,
You’re even more charming when that Argentine pride comes out to play.
And hey, two more years of university, then maybe you’ll finally be through,
While somewhere in another class, there are students learning from you.
One day you’re studying, the next you’re building the life you had in mind,
And if things don’t work out? Well, you can always sleep and try another time.
Wherever that life takes you, there’ll be days you won’t quite know,
When everything feels like a labyrinth and you’re not sure where to go.
You don’t have to burn the key or give up on a way out,
Sometimes someone finds you, and helps you see the route.
I wish that when people see you, their hearts would jump and sing.
How good, how nice, how perfect, to feel such a thing.
I hope your smile keeps finding people, right when they need it most,
And stays with them a little while, like a memory they hold close.
I wish you more quiet mornings before you rush into the crowd,
Less rushing for the bus with a hundred thoughts spinning around.
And when you drive, let your phone, the messages, and distractions wait,
The rest of the world can wait too, you know, even if you arrive a little late.
I hope the moon serenades your nights, while the Koels wake my mornings,
That somewhere in those passing hours, the world feels less foreign.
I hope your nights are kind to you, and your mornings start out light,
And may the things that make you happy never leave your sight.
I hope this letter has better luck than Magellan crossing the seas,
That somehow every little word arrives exactly where it should be.
May it travel through the distance without losing what it means,
And reach you with the warmth that fills the spaces in between.
I wish you many things, because you deserve the best and more.
You deserve the greatest kind of love a person could ever hope for.
I may have said it once or twice, but I’ll say it again for what it’s worth,
I hope your heart will always be in the happiest place on Earth.
“It's hard to believe, but I couldn't see…”
